A mother and father from Lethbridge were accused of assaulting and sexually assaulting their six-week-old daughter.

According to the Lethbridge Police Service, officers responded on Wednesday, Jan. 18 following a call to check on the welfare of an infant at a home located on the city’s north side.

Officers found the six-week-old girl in medical distress.

The parent, who was in the home at the time, cannot be identified to protect the identity of the child.

Emergency medical services took the infant with serious injuries to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police said the probe found that the girl was assaulted and sexually assaulted several times since her birth.

A 52-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault, sexual interference and failing to provide the essentials of life. A 31-year-old woman is accused of failing to provide the essentials of life.

The mother and father were remanded in custody after a judicial interim release hearing. They appeared in the court on Friday and another date was fixed for January 25.
