A hospital in Kitchener, Ont. says it is postponing some elective surgeries and temporarily closing an operating room as 120 staff members have to stay home COVID-19,

Grand River Hospital Affected employees say – amounting to two per cent of the workforce – have either tested positive for COVID-19 or come in contact with someone who has.

Hospital spokeswoman Cheryl Evans says the condition has caused an “unexpected” temporary closure of an operating room at the hospital and affected her ability to carry out between two and ten elective surgeries a day.

Evans says the hospital is prioritizing urgent cases, including cancer cases.

She says the hospital plans to resume the surgery in August and again in September.

Ontario is currently experiencing a seventh wave of COVID-19.
