Kerala’s active Covid-19 caseload dips below 1 lakh after 104 days

Active caseload for Kerala as the pandemic subsides COVID-19 For the first time since June 29, it fell below 1 lakh on Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, there were 96,646 active Covid-19 cases in the state. The caseload touched a high of 4,45,334 on 15 May at the peak of the second wave, before peaking at 96,012 on 28 June and then rose again in the backdrop of Onam celebrations.

However, Kerala has the largest number of people undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in home/hospital isolation in the country and also contributes the most to daily infections. Maharashtra ranks second with more than 35000 active cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with 15,000 cases.

On Tuesday, Kerala reported 7823 new cases and 12,490 cured when over 86,000 samples were tested. The test positivity rate (TPR) remained just above 9 per cent. The health department said only 11 per cent of the active cases are currently admitted in hospitals or field hospitals such as domiciliary care centres, first- and second-line treatment centres. The rest are in isolation at home. With 106 new deaths, the toll touched 26,448.

However, as a note of concern, it was reported that out of 7823 new cases on Tuesday, 2036 persons had received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 2472 persons had taken both the doses. A total of 2281 persons who tested positive were not vaccinated.

Among those who tested positive in the months of June, July and August, six per cent had received a single dose of the vaccine and 3.6 per cent had taken both doses. While breakthrough infections were being reported, vaccines were shown to prevent serious illnesses and deaths in people who contracted the virus.

In Kerala, 93.6 per cent of the eligible population above the age of 18 years have received a single dose of vaccine and 44 per cent have received both doses. The Health Department claimed that Kerala ranks first in the country in terms of vaccination per million population.
