Kerala government to launch mobile app for waste disposal

The Kerala government will launch a mobile application for tracking and improving the collection of inorganic waste in local self-governing bodies. The Smart Garbage mobile app will initially be launched in all six municipal corporations, 70-odd municipalities and 300 village bodies.

Minister of Local Self-Government Department MV Govindan Master said that this scheme will make waste disposal more efficient. The app will be deployed to sense and manage the amount of inorganic waste collected from each household, and explain how the waste is to be treated. He said that the QR code given to all the households would be used to get the information about the generation of waste.

This system will enable all the local bodies and the department to track the waste collection, which will be done by the volunteers of Kudumbashree Mission, the state poverty alleviation and women empowerment programme.

The minister said the volunteers, known as Harita Karma Sena, would be provided smartphones as part of the project, which would be supported by the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation.
