According to the country’s athletics body, Tyrop was found dead at his home in Iten, after “allegedly stabbed”.
Local reports said that Tirope was found dead with a stab wound in his stomach.
Athletics Kenya said it was “still working to find out more details about his passing.”
Tirop’s agent – Gianni Demadonna – also confirmed his passing by e-mail to CNN.
Athletics Kenya was not immediately available for further comment when contacted by CNN.
The 25-year-old won bronze medals in the 10,000m at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships and finished fourth in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Games.
Last month, Tirop made history at the Adizero Road To Records event in Germany by clocking 28 seconds off the world record for the 10km long run.
Tirope finished in a time of 30:01, breaking the previous record of 30:29, which had been set by Moroccan Asmai Leghazoui in 2002.
After the race, she said: “I am very happy to have broken the world record. I thought the pace was good. The course was great too.”
At the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Tirop became the second youngest gold medalist in the women’s race after Zola Budd.
Athletics Kenya said the country has “lost a jewel, thanks to its stellar performances which was one of the fastest rising athletics giants on the international stage.”
Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta also paid tribute in a statement, saying: “It is disturbing, extremely unfortunate and very sad that we have lost a young and promising athlete who has done so much to our country at the young age of 25. This year she achieved glory through her exploits on the global athletics stage including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she was part of the Kenyan team in Japan.”
