Karnal farmer-police dispute: One-man inquiry commission begins probe – Bharat Times Hindi News

The Haryana government has constituted a one-member commission to inquire into incidents of violence, including police lathi-charge, on farmers protesting at Karnal’s Bastar toll plaza. The state government had last month appointed Justice Somnath Agrawal, a retired judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as a commission of inquiry.

Before leaving for Karnal, Justice Agrawal said that the inquiry commission will try to complete the investigation at the earliest and submit the report to the state government. Replying to a question here, he said that since the commission has to investigate the entire incident on August 28 at Bastar toll plaza in Karnal, it will take four to five months.

An official statement said the government had constituted the commission on August 28 to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry into the sequence of incidents at the Bastar toll plaza in Karnal. In this regard, the state cabinet

“The Commission of Inquiry will investigate the circumstances including police action and use of force against protesters in Karnal on August 28,” the statement said. The commission will also find out the persons responsible for the said situation. And further (IAS officer) Ayush Sinha, then sub-divisional magistrate, Karnal, will investigate the role of police in the action on August 28, it had said.

The Commission of Inquiry shall complete the inquiry and submit a report to the State Government within a period of one month from the date of publication of the notification in the Official Gazette. The Haryana government had last month ordered a judicial inquiry into the clash between farmers and the police in August.

Around 10 protesters were injured in a clash with the police when they tried to march towards the BJP meeting place. Sinha, a 2018 batch IAS officer, was reportedly told by policemen that if he broke barricades near the place where the BJP program was going on, he could “break heads” of farmers.
