Karachi: Heavy rain, strong winds likely in next 24 hours

Karachi: The port city is likely to receive heavy rain accompanied by gale and strong winds on July 3 and 4, predicted the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Saturday.

According to the Meteorological Department, the first round of monsoon rains in Karachi is likely to start from this evening or tonight. Before the rains, strong winds with a speed of up to 81 kmph are likely in the port city.

The Met Office said that the second monsoon is expected in the country from July 7.

The maximum temperature in the metropolis is expected to be in the range of 34 to 36 degree Celsius. Besides, the humidity level of the port city was recorded at 66% today.

In a statement, the Meteorological Department said, “It is very likely to be humid and partly cloudy in most of the districts of the country with rain/thundershowers over Kashmir, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Lower Sindh and East Balochistan. [today],

The Meteorological Department said that Monsoon rains have started in some parts of Northeast Punjab, Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Scattered rain and thundershowers are very likely to occur over these parts in the coming days.

Strong Monsoon currents are also likely to enter southeast parts of Sindh and Balochistan from today.

Under the influence of this weather system:

  • Thunderstorm accompanied with heavy to very heavy rain very likely over Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Hyderabad, Tando M. Khan, Tando Alayar, Karachi, Dadu and Jamshoro districts during July 2-5 .
  • Rain-thundershower with isolated heavy falls is expected in Shaheed Benazirabad, Noshero Feroz, Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Ghotki and Kashmore districts during the period.
  • Thunderstorm accompanied with heavy to very heavy rain is very likely at Khujdar, Barkhan, Lasbela, Kohlu, Sibi, Awaran, Nasirabad, Panjgur from July 2-5.
  • Thunderstorm accompanied with some heavy rain is very likely over Quetta, Jhob, Dalbandin, Nokkundi, Noshki, Qila Saifullah, Mastung, Kalat and Coastal Belt (Gwadar, Pasni and Ormara) during this period.

The PMD has warned that heavy rains may cause urban flooding in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Khujdar, Ormara, Pasni and Gwadar during the forecast period.

The heavy downpour may cause flash floods in local nallahs/rivers of Barkhan, Jhob, Sibi, Panjgur, Kohlu, Nasirabad, Nagarparkar and Dadu.

The PMD has warned that the typhoon in Sindh and Balochistan could damage loose structures in vulnerable places.
