LONDON (AP) – The Jacksonville Jaguars ended their 20-game losing streak when Matthew Wright scored a 53-yard field goal when time ended in a 23-20 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in London.
Trevor Lawrence Lavisca connected with a short oblique pass to Shenault Jr. and the Jaguars (1-5) with 1 second remaining after the Dolphins (1-5) gambled on fourth and -1 from the 46-yard line. Timeout was called. came less.
Lawrence threw for 319 yards and a touchdown as he and coach Urban Meyer finally secured their first NFL win—even if it required a trip to Europe to do it in a “home” game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Prior to Sunday, the Jaguars had not won a game, beating Indianapolis 27-20 in the 2020 season opener. The 20-game losing streak is the second longest in the Super Bowl era.
The Dolphins lost their fifth game in a row, spoiling the return of Tua Tagovailoa, who made his first start in a month. The quarterback of the second year passed two touchdown passes to Jaylen Waddle.
Jacksonville’s victory also broke the London Hex over the rookie quarterback, who had been 0-5 since the NFL began staging regular-season games in 2007.
Now, this dolphin is racking up losses. Miami has not won since beating New England in the season opener, when the Dolphins were considered a potential playoff team after a 10-6 season in 2020.
Wright tied the game for 20 on a 54-yard field goal with 3:40 remaining.
The Dolphins took the 20-17 lead when Tagovailoa made a seven-game, 91-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Waddle to leave the game with 10:22. Waddle caught the ball and stuck it over the goal line as Nevin Lawson faced it.
Jacksonville took a 17–13 lead on James Robinson’s 1 yard run at the start of the third quarter, when he had run for 24 yards in the previous game. The drive included a 29-yard reception by Jamal Agnew and an unnecessary roughness penalty on Miami safety Jevon Holland.
Tagovailoa and the Dolphins offense got off to a hot start, scoring on their first drive, but missed two other opportunities from inside the Jacksonville 10-yard line, settling for field goals both times.
On the opening drive, Tagovailoa completed eight of 10 passes and a 75-yard opening drive with a 6-yard slant to Jaylen Waddle to put Miami 7-0 ahead. He converted three thirds down, including a 20-yard reception, to tight end Mike Gesicki and Tagovailoa’s 7-yard scramble to the 6-yard line, setting up Waddell’s touchdown.
The Jaguars answered with big plays of their own when Lawrence took a 24 yard lead on his first play with Agnew. The drive stalled, however, when Dan Arnold dropped a third-down pass at the 16-yard line. The Jaguars settled for a 40-yard field goal from Matthew Wright – his first field goal of the season – to make it 7-3.
After field goals from 33 and 24 yards by Jason Sanders, the Jaguars forced a three-out and dropped the ball in the half with 1:45 at the Miami 49-yard line, down 13-3.
Lawrence then took advantage of Miami’s weak secondary, launching a perfect pass to Marvin Jones Jr. in the final field for a 28-yard touchdown pass, with backup cornerback Noah Igbinoghin in coverage taking the score 13–10 and in the half. 40 seconds left.
