‘It means world’: Man donates kidney to colleague, friend

The one-time bond between the two friends has become even tighter after a successful kidney transplant surgery. Hudson told WISN, “I knew we could be a potential match, and I told him… when it’s time, let us know.” The time came earlier this year when Bajwa, who was born with a genetic disorder, needed a kidney transplant. Bajwa explained to WISN how the two friends learned they were a match. “He messaged me and we FaceTimed. He was like ‘What do you think?’ I am a perfect match,'” Bajwa said. After months of testing, the two arrived at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center on August 26 to undergo life-changing surgery at the same time. The hospital’s abdominal transplant medical director shared his thoughts with WISN on how to help eliminate long waiting lists for kidney transplants. “Donating is very safe and can certainly eliminate waiting lists on behalf of a kidney if people move forward. It is a recovery process of about six weeks for both Bajwa and Hudson, said Dr. Ajay Sahajpal. Health officials say that both are recovering smoothly after successful surgery.
