Iowa Fire Chief Driving School Bus Managed To Pull Over After Heart Attack

Two cities in Dallas County are saying goodbye to their fire chiefs. Ken Cavanaugh died of a heart attack, but not before driving his school bus full of children off the road and saving their lives. Cavanaugh was the fire chief at Woodward and Boughton. “It is really difficult. “Really tough,” said Captain Carl Harris of the Bouton Fire Department. Boughton firefighter Andy Werley said, “Losing your own is the hardest thing to do.” Bouton firefighters are saying goodbye to their chief and his best friend. Ken Cavanaugh died of a heart attack on Monday. He was in the hospital since October 18. That’s when he became ill while driving the Woodward-Granger school bus. Despite his pain, he managed to get the bus off the highway to the soybean field. The kids got out safely. “I’m sure the first thing he was thinking about is how I’m going to save these kids from getting injured or suffering a catastrophic school bus accident,” Harris said. His friends are not surprised. “He cares about you more than himself. He has always been like that,” said Harris. Cavanaugh has been a firefighter here since 1977. Now the fire station is filled with flowers from friends and family. All in all a brave and dedicated rescue worker. Whose final act was saving many lives. Werley said, “I think if anyone ever mentions Kenny Cavanaugh’s name, the hero will be right there with it.” Harris said, “He’s definitely a hero.” The funeral takes place at Woodward-Granger High School at 10 a.m. Saturday.
