Karachi: Anticipating urban flooding in low-lying areas of Karachi, Chief Meteorologist Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz said on Saturday that intermittent monsoon rains are likely to wreak havoc in the metropolis by this evening or tonight as six more people are here. He said that the intensity of monsoon currents may be equal to or more than yesterday.

The meteorologist said that under the influence of monsoon currents, there is a possibility of rain in the port city from this afternoon.

Intermittent rains have once again exposed the claims of the city’s drainage system and the Sindh government’s own rain emergency plans. Several main roads and roads were completely submerged, while hundreds of commuters remained stranded without any help.

Rain water entered various houses in Gulistan-e-Johar Block 12. Aslam Siddiqui, a resident, said that the Cantonment Board Faisal had not cleaned the storm water drain, resulting in sudden flooding in the neighbourhood.

Mosmiyat, Munavvar Chowringhee, Jauhar Chowringhee and Jauhar Mor were blocked for traffic as these areas were knee-deep in water. The newly constructed University Road, on which lakhs of rupees were spent, was also completely underwater, and was inaccessible for vehicular movement from Nipah to Shaheed-e-Millat Road.

New MA Jinnah Road and Jahangir Road, where the headquarters of the ruling PPP and Jamaat-e-Islami are located, were also completely submerged in rain water.

The traffic police said the Shahra-e-Faisal at Drigh Road was flooded with rain water and inaccessible for movement of traffic, while Rashid Minhas Road in Jauhar Mor, Lalu Khait towards Hasan Square, University Road in Safari Park, Nipah and Hassan Square were flooded and traffic was disrupted. was stuck.

After the Korangi River flooded, the Korangi Causeway was closed to traffic, forcing commuters to use only the narrow two-lane Jam Sadiq flyover to reach any other part of the city.

Qayyumabad Chowringhee and Expressway were also badly affected due to accumulation of rain water, disrupting traffic from district Korangi towards south and east districts.

Due to overflow of Tado dam in Gadap town, M-9 was submerged and traffic was affected. The flood waters entered the northern bypass on the M-9 and later entered the residential area of ​​Saadi Town, bringing traffic on the highway to a complete halt.

Many people going to the animal sacrifice market or coming back from the market found themselves stuck in traffic due to the flooding of the super highway. The team of Karachi Development Authority reached M9 late in the night for rescue and drainage operation.

In its press statement, K-Electric said that it is ensuring uninterrupted power supply to major parts of the city during monsoon rains. A KE spokesperson stressed that the maximum number of over 1,900 affected feeders in the company’s network was less than 150.

The spokesman said that most of them were temporarily closed due to illegal connections or the prevalence of waterlogging, which could pose a security threat, connecting these areas with power to be restored immediately upon clearance from the ground teams. was given.

“Operations were affected due to waterlogging in the Gulshan-e-Hadid and Gadap areas due to heavy rains, and the utility requested civic agencies to assist in draining the water to a safe level to begin restoration efforts.”

Expressing sympathy and condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones due to electric shock, Kei categorically stated that no utility infrastructure was involved in any of the incidents reported.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted more rain in Karachi ahead of Eid-ul-Adha with warning of urban flooding in low-lying areas of the city.

“Heavy rain is expected on the outskirts of the city. The existing rain system will continue till tomorrow evening or night,” Sardar Sarfaraz said.
