Indigenous Outdoor Learning Center opens near Candle Lake, Sask. , Globalnews.ca

A new camp revolving around land-based education has been launched near the Hannin Creek Education and Applied Research Center candle lakeSask.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Saskatchewan Wildlife Association (SWF) and Prince Albert Grand Council have been collaborating on the project, and on 15 June four tipis were raised for the new Indigenous Outdoor Learning Centre.

“The new center will be called Mitho Aski Kiskiihtamovin, the Cree for good education through experiences on the ground,” says Larry Rossia, president and CEO of Sask Polytech.

“This is an exciting collaboration that will focus on land-based education and provide cultural awareness training and education about the ways and history of Indigenous peoples. We will support the Prince Albert Grand Council and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation on this important center located in North Saskatchewan. Thrilled to have you as a partner.”

Instructors will teach students and camp participants how to live off the ground, learn from the ground up and live in harmony with the land.

“It is an ongoing expansion of the core vision that brings together Saskatchewan Polytechnic and SWF; to enhance and encourage education, research, cultural and historical opportunities and progress,” says SWF President David York.
