AIIMS Bhubaneswar has achieved another milestone by treating a young girl suffering from a rare lung disease called Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis.
The little girl is also the youngest child in the country to undergo this process. This is a rare treatment that has been successfully performed by a team of doctors from the Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
According to the information, the 22-month-old girl of Dhenkanal had contracted Kovid-19 along with other family members in June 2021 and she recovered. In July, he developed fever with difficulty in breathing, for which he was admitted to various hospitals in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. However, as the child’s condition did not improve, he was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
After diagnosis, she was suspected of suffering from pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, a rare disease in which milk-like material accumulates in both lungs, which the child cannot eat out. The only available treatment option for this disease is lavage of both lungs with saline, which is technically challenging in such a sick child. An expert team of doctors was formed and the group decided to wash the lungs by placing the child on ECMO support (artificial lung).
The team included doctors from the departments of Pediatrics, Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. The team did the entire process on August 30. After this the girl’s condition improved and she went for another such procedure on 13th September, which improved her condition. He was discharged on Saturday with minimum oxygen requirement, the AIIMS authority said.
