The Union Government will use the opportunity of the upcoming General Assembly of the International Labor Conference (ILO) to reach bilateral understanding with more countries for the welfare of workers under the framework of social security agreements.

Labor ministers of member countries including India’s Bhupendra Yadav will attend the ILO program.

Labor and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said on Wednesday, “Efforts are on in more countries to sign agreements with India to bring Indian workers working abroad under social security cover.”

The operating mechanism under the framework is that the foreign countries concerned provide the details of provident fund accounts of Indian migrant workers.

This will help the Government of India to bring migrant workers under the ambit of social security under the labor law.

Till date, India has agreements with 19 countries including Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Switzerland and France. An agreement has also been signed with Brazil, but it has not yet come into force.

Yadav said that the government was focusing on improving the condition of the workers through its welfare measures.
