At the end of the second day, the hosts scored 69 for no loss in their second innings. Mayank Agarwal was batting on 38 with Cheteshwar Pujara, who opened the innings, while Shubman Gill injured his right elbow while fielding for 29.

India may have tightened the noose around the Black Caps, but Ejaz Patel was the talk of the town. This New Zealand spinner created history by taking all ten wickets in an innings. He bowled well giving the ball a lot of revs, enough wind and a good loop.

With his figures of 10-119, Ijaz joined the likes of England’s Jim Laker (1956) and India’s Anil Kumble (1999) and single-handedly dismissed the entire opposition.

Laker claimed 10-53 against Australia at Old Trafford, while Kumble registered a 10-74 win against Pakistan at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground in New Delhi. Incidentally, Ajaz, like Laker, plays for Yorkshire, being the first to claim an All-10 in an innings.

The Kiwi spinner, who took only 29 wickets in his last 10 Tests, took four wickets on Friday, added two more to his tally in the morning session on the second day and then took four more wickets in the post-lunch session.

30-year-old Ejaz, who moved from Mumbai to New Zealand at the age of eight and made his Test debut against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2018, took his first four wickets for 73 runs and the next six for just 46. On a hat-trick in his first over of the second day when he dismissed Wriddhiman Saha and Ashwin in successive deliveries.

India were bowled out for 325, starting 221/4 on the night.

Ejaz’s brilliant effort beat Indian opener Mayank Agarwal’s scintillating 150-run knock. He hit 17 fours and four sixes in his innings of 311 balls. Agarwal, who turned 120 overnight, added 30 runs to his total on Saturday but more importantly, he put on 67 runs for the seventh wicket with Axar Patel (52).

The humble dedication of the Kiwi team while chasing the target stunned many. The entire team got out for just 62 runs. This is the lowest score by any team against India, the previous lowest being 79 by South Africa in Nagpur in 2015.

Siraj started the carnage for India as he took the first three wickets, being the only fast bowler to take a wicket in this Test. He bowled a graceful line, channeled the ball and brilliantly disguised a straight line that was enough to catch a batsman of Ross Taylor’s caliber.

After this, Ashwin took four wickets for eight runs. New Zealand’s entire innings lasted just 128 minutes as only two batsmen – stand-in captain Tom Latham (10) and bowler Kyle Jamieson (17) – could reach double digits. Three batsmen got out for zero. India did not follow-on and in their second innings, Mayank Agarwal scored 38 and Cheteshwar Pujara made 29 at the stumps and scored 69 for no loss.
