Ice-cool Dan Evans battles Covid fatigue to reach US Open second round with a four-set win over Thiago Monteiro

Dan Evans on Monday night answered his own questions about whether a recent bout of covid would have badly affected him for the US Open.

When his energy level dropped against him in the second set of the first round BrazilThe Thiago Monteiro looked like his worst fears were about to be confirmed.

Still the British managed to rally No. 1 in the sweltering heat, and he ran with a 6-3 6-7 6-4 6-1 victory, aided by self-administered ice treatments.

Evans was looking forward to the winner from last night’s match between American Marcus Giron and Frenchman Antoine Hoang. In the second round, he holds the record for winning at least one match in his five US Open main draws, the Grand Slam where he has performed. Most consistent in his career.

Evans has been disappointed with his overall record in the majors, relatively modest in comparison to some of the extensive touring success he had during his second arrival.

His form has been on the wane since he was ruled out of the Olympics due to the virus, and lefthanders like Monteiro aren’t always his favorite opponent.

But the 31-year-old midlander made full use of his skills to disrupt his opponent’s baseline play, and he was particularly impressive with his clever volley.

Keeping in mind that he wanted to keep the points as low as possible, he kept darting and won 50 points overall at the nets.

The main point in the match came on his second set point in the third. Monteiro was given a second breach that had denied him service the first time, and Evans took full advantage. This allowed him to walk out of court after a grueling three hours and 34 minutes.
