Hungary finds Netflix cartoon with same-sex kiss violated law

The Hungarian media regulator today said a Netflix children’s show had violated a controversial anti-LGBTQ+ law by showing girls kissing.

The National Media and Communications Authority said their investigation found that a scene where two girls confess their love and kiss “could be harmful to the moral development of minors.” Another scene where scary creatures chase characters was also considered problematic for kids.

The Netflix series, “Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous,” was rated for 7-year-olds and above, but the Hungarian regulator said the streaming company should have recommended its show only for teenagers older than 12.

The media regulator opened an investigation in August following “several complaints” about the Netflix show violating an anti-LGBTQ+ law passed in 2021, which prohibits the promotion and portrayal to children and teenagers of what it refers to as “divergence from self-identity corresponding to sex at birth, sex change or homosexuality.”

The Hungarian authority said it was going to ask the Dutch audiovisual regulator (CVDM) to investigate the case. Netflix’s European headquarters are in the Netherlands.

It added that its decision was similar to the British Board of Film Classification, which advised against children watching the series because of dangerous behavior.”

Netflix declined to comment. The Dutch media regulator didn’t reply in time for publication.

The European Commission has taken Budapest to the Court of Justice of the EU over the law. The date for the legal proceedings has yet to be determined, according to a court spokesperson.
