Huge earthquake in Haiti, felt across Caribbean

A major earthquake struck western Haiti on Saturday and was felt across the Caribbean as people fled their homes for fear that buildings might collapse.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7 quake struck about 150 km west of the capital Port-au-Prince, 8 km (5 mi) from the city of Petit Trou de Nipes, at a depth of 10 km.

The country is still recovering from a magnitude 7 earthquake near the capital 11 years ago that killed tens if not hundreds of people and flattened many buildings, leaving many homeless.

“Everyone is really scared. It’s been years since such a big earthquake,” said Daniel Ross, a resident of Guantanamo city in eastern Cuba, as his house stood firmly but the furniture shook.

The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning after the quake.
