House Speaker McCarthy talks to Musk about making Twitter ‘fair all the way’

Twitter CEO Elon Musk discussed making the social media site “fair on all sides” in a meeting with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., the lawmaker told reporters Friday.

In remarks reported by NBC News, McCarthy said of the meeting, “He wants a level playing field” and that everyone should have a voice. “He’s really defending the First Amendment. And we had a really good discussion.”

Musk shared on twitter Thursday evening he met with McCarthy and Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies, DN.Y, “to make sure this platform is a fair one for both.” on thursdays, only mccarthy shared That Musk had come to wish him a birthday.

On Friday, McCarthy also confirmed that Jeffries was at Thursday’s meeting and that he had not previously met with Musk.

A Jefferies colleague told Washington Post His meeting with Musk was merely coincidental and occurred as Musk was leaving his meeting with McCarthy. Jeffries’ office confirmed the Washington Post anecdote to CNBC.

McCarthy also confirmed to reporters Friday that he had called a meeting in his office that day with Musk and several top Republicans: Majority Leader Steve Scalise R-La., Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash.

NBC News reported that McCarthy said he wanted to “continue discussions” of fairness on tech platforms with other lawmakers as they seek to move legislation and ensure “Americans have an equal voice”.
