House help arrested for ‘theft of jewelery worth Rs 40 lakh’

Vile Parle police have arrested a 35-year-old house help and his accomplice for stealing gold and diamond jewelery worth Rs 40.5 lakh from a 73-year-old doctor’s house in the western suburbs.

Police said the arrested house help Ganesh Tawde has been stealing one item at a time for the past three months. Police said the case was registered on Friday when the complainant of the case, Dr R Bhat, realized that valuables in his cupboard were missing from his bag.

An official said, “As soon as the case was registered, a team was sent to his registered address in Bhandup, but we could not trace him as he had recently shifted to another rented apartment in Ashok Nagar, Bhandup. “

The team then went to the address provided by his brother Vishwanath, after which he was taken into custody. Police said that during initial interrogation he confessed to stealing valuables from December 20, 2021.

The police said he would take the valuables and hand them over to his friend Chandrakant Bhilare, who would help him sell them.

“Bhilare is a rickshaw puller and after selling those valuables, he used to hand over the money to Tawde. They will distribute the money accordingly,” said another official.

Police said Bhilare was arrested on Sunday when he was called to the Dadar railway station. Police said the investigator also claimed that they believed there was another person involved who helped them sell the jewellery.

“None of the stolen valuables have been recovered so far. We are trying to do that,” said an official.

Both the accused have been booked under section 381 (theft of property by clerk or servant) of the Indian Penal Code. They were produced in the court and taken on police remand.
