Holiday surprise: Single Stockbridge mom finds keys to dream home at Christmas time

STOCKBRIDGE (CBS46) — A Stockbridge family was quite surprised after receiving the keys to their new home on Tuesday.

Shanika said she was excited to be on her way to the residence, but was stunned to find that it was fully furnished and decorated.

“Oh my god, I love it,” Shanika said. “Everything I want is here.”

The single mom of three kids has always dreamed of becoming a homeowner, but it was too good to overcome the hurdles created by the down payment.

“We always shared a house and we never had our own home,” she said.

For the past two decades, Warrick Dunn Charities through its Homes for the Holidays program has worked to help single parents achieve their goal of first-time homeownership.

“Working on this program has really been more about how we can help families enjoy their holiday season, the fruits of their labor,” Dunn said. “They’ve worked for it; we just want to be able to support and lead them.”

While the new home was acquired and financed through Habitat for Humanity, Shanika Warrick was surprised with a $5,000 down-payment assistance check from Dunn Charities and $10,000 in baggage from Aaron.

With tears in her eyes, Shaneka said she was glad to know that her family is no longer compelled to share the same space.

He said that he was thankful that what once filled his vision board is now in front of his eyes.

“It’s nothing but God, it’s not my job,” Shanika said. “I was just praying, and he answered my prayer.”
