london ontario police announced the departure of Lewis ‘Bud’ CoreyThe first black officer of the force.

Koray joined in 1951 and served for over 30 years.

“He was a great man,” said Ozzie Nethersole, vice chairman of the London Police Association. “His legacy is carried on.”

Nethersole says that as a black police officer, Coray was a role model for him and other officers.

“When you have someone to look up to and you have a role model, it makes a difference,” he said. “He’s an inspiration to many of us. He wanted to be a police officer and I wanted to be a police officer (so) I followed that path.

London Police’s annual Lewis Corre Award for Youth recognizes leaders in the community and continues to celebrate Corre’s contribution to policing.

Visitation will be held on Monday at Westview Funeral Chapel. On January 16 between 2 pm to 4 pm as well as between 6 pm to 8 pm

A funeral service is scheduled for Mars. 17 January.
