A new two-dollar coin to celebrate being late Queen Elizabeth II is set to begin operating across Canada later this month – and Royal Canadian Mint First look has been released.

The coin, dated 2022, features the late Queen’s profile on one side and the traditional Brent Townsend polar bear on the other – the standard markings on the two-dollar Canadian coin.

“Queen Elizabeth II served as Canada’s head of state for seven decades, and for millions of Canadians, she was the only monarch they knew,” Marie Lemay, CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, said in a press release.

“Our special $2 circulation coin provides a way for Canadians to remember him.”

The process is underway to replace the Queen’s image with that of King Charles III


However, the new coin will also have a black nickel finish on the outer ring.

The black ring is supposed to be “reminiscent of a mourning armlet,” according to a press release from the Royal Canadian Mint, “echoing the loss felt by millions of Canadians” after the Queen’s death.

Five million commemorative two-dollar coins will enter national coin distribution this month, and are expected to appear “gradually” as banks re-stock their inventory. The mint may produce even more coins “depending on market needs”.

“The Mint is hosting public coin exchanges at its Ottawa and Winnipeg boutiques on December 7 and 8, 2022,” the press release said.

Queen Elizabeth was the longest reigning monarch of Britain and Canada.

He died on 8 September at Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96.

According to her death certificate, the cause of death was listed as old age.
