Gujarat: Tanzanian citizen arrested with heroin at SVPI airport

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a Tanzanian national at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport and seized 4.5 kg heroin worth Rs 32 crore.

According to DRI officials, the accused was kept in the airport premises after his arrival from Sharjah on Wednesday.

This is the eighth arrest of a foreign national at the SVPI airport along with the heroin seizure made by the DRI in the last two weeks.

“Based on specific intelligence inputs, DRI officials intercepted a Tanzanian nationality passenger traveling from Sharjah at SVIP airport on Wednesday,” a DRI statement said.

“During checking his luggage, four plastic bags filled with a brown powdery substance were found. The initial test of the recovered packages, tested positive for heroin,” it adds.

According to the DRI, a total of 4.5 kg heroin worth about 32 crores was recovered from the said plastic bags and seized under the provisions of NDPS Act, 1985.
