Gujarat: 62-year-old woman arrested for killing grandson

A 62-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly thrashing her one-and-a-half-year-old grandson to death with a sharp-edged weapon at Khedbrahma in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district.

The accused has been identified as Chandrikaben Thakor and the victim as Shailesh Thakor.

According to the police, the incident took place on the night of January 23 when the accused was at their house along with their two grandchildren Rutvik (4) and Shailesh, while their parents were outside.

Rutvik and Shailesh’s father Mukesh Thakor (30) complained to the police on Wednesday, “I was working as a daily wage laborer in Udaipur, Rajasthan and my wife Veena Thakor had gone to her parents’ house in Wagheshwari village. . For the past three months. My mother Chandrikaben was entrusted with taking care of her grandson. On the morning of January 24, I was told by my sister that my son Shailesh had died and Rutvik had suffered injuries. When I returned home When I arrived I was told by my mother that she had last seen the children playing outside the house and they were found injured around 8.30 pm (Jan 23). My mother then went to her second husband’s house in a nearby village. That’s when my neighbors told me that they heard my children crying because of corporal punishment by my mother. When I asked my eldest son Ratvik, he told me that Dadi had hit him and killed Shailesh.

PP Jani, sub-inspector of Khedbrahma police station told Indian Express: “The accused did not like to take care of his grandchildren in the absence of their parents. He also fought with the neighbors and beat up the grandchildren in the past as well. We have arrested him and sent him to judicial custody.”
