GTHA mayors seek to raise funds for resettlement efforts for Ukrainian newcomers from Ottawa, Ontario | globalnews.ca

mayors and presidents of several large municipalities in Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area federal and calling Ontario Governments will provide funding for a program dedicated to helping Ukrainian newcomers.

Municipal leaders said in a joint statement that nearly 2,000 people from 750 households have access to emergency housing and other services through a project to coordinate efforts to support Ukrainian newcomers.

The mayors of Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Vaughan, along with other municipal leaders in the region, say they are continuing to provide services for Ukrainians at “almost the sole expense” of the municipalities.

The federal immigration department and the Ontario government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to government figures, more than 145,000 Ukrainian citizens and Canadian permanent residents of Ukrainian descent have come to Canada since the beginning of last year.
