The crash, which occurred Monday evening, stemmed from an LCBO robbery in Clarington, Ontario, which saw Durham Regional Police officers pursue the suspect on the wrong side of the highway.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which investigates the conduct of officers in serious incidents, including deaths, is now investigating the incident.

In an update on Thursday, the SIU said the infant’s parents – a 33-year-old father and 27-year-old mother, who live in Ajax – were taken to hospital after the accident. Two grandparents, aged 60 and 55, died along with the child.

event started On Monday evening around 7:50 p.m., Durham Police officers were called to a robbery at the LCBO by an off-duty officer.

SIU spokeswoman Monica Hudon said Tuesday that officers found a vehicle of interest — a U-Haul cargo van — and pursued the van through several streets in Durham “because the vehicle was driving erratically.”

They said the vehicle went the wrong way on Highway 401 at Stevenson Road in Oshawa and was going westbound in the eastbound lanes.
