Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, informed employees on January 20 that the cuts were coming.

He said the layoffs reflect a “rigorous review” of its operations by Google. Pichai said Alphabet was “deeply sorry” for the jobs being cut “across product areas, functions, levels and regions”.

It is one of the company’s largest rounds of layoffs and adds to thousands of other job losses announced by Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook parent Meta. In January, at least 48,000 job cuts were announced by major tech companies.

When asked about the Canadian jobs, a Dell spokesperson told Global News in an email that the reductions would affect teams around the world, but did not have specific details to share.

“We have already started these conversations and (layoff) dates vary based on local laws and regulations. We have nothing further to add,” he said.
