basketball superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander The Hamilton native has another accolade added to his already crowded trophy case after being named the Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year (GHAY) and Bill Sturpp Award winner on Thursday night.

2023 was a major year for the 26-year-old and he was the unanimous selection to receive the honour. Gilgeous-Alexander was also named GHAY for 2020.

He led Canada to a bronze medal at the FIBA ​​World Cup last September, thanks to a 127–118 victory in overtime over the United States in the third-place game that gave Canada its first podium finish at the competition.

The Sir Alan McNabb and St. Thomas More High School alumnus was also named the Northern Star Award winner as Canada’s Athlete of the Year in 2023.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished fourth overall in scoring National Basketball Association Averaged a career-high 31.2 points per game in the 2022–23 season. He also ranked third with 1.6 steals per game.

Entering Thursday night’s slate of NBA games, Gilgeous-Alexander is second in the league with 31.2 points per game and No. 1 with 2.1 steals per contest.

Other nominees for the 29th annual GHAY included Hamilton Tiger-Cats linebacker Simony Lawrence, McMaster basketball player Sarah Gates, Forge FC goaltender Tristan Henry and Hamilton Cardinals outfielder Tyler Duncan.

Previous winners of the Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year include golfer Mackenzie Hughes, swimmer Joan Malar and hockey player Ryan Ellis.
