UPDATE (CBS46) – Residents of LaGrange are being asked to avoid the Sunny Point Circle neighborhood as officers get into a standoff with a barricaded gunman.

The incident began on Tuesday when officers arrived to arrest Brian Jesse, a resident in the 100 block of Sunny Point Circle, on charges of felony intimidation, felony assault and child cruelty. The allegations came just a day after police conducted a welfare check on two 8-year-olds inside the home because Jesse was allegedly threatening to kill himself. Both the children were taken out of the house safely.

Authorities began evacuating residents on Tuesday afternoon after learning of several firearms and explosives inside Jesse’s home.

While evacuating the neighborhood, Jesse began firing rounds from an AR-15. He retreated inside his house where the barricades remained.

Law enforcement established a perimeter around the area. Attempts were made to defuse the situation, but this resulted in more shots fired from Jesse’s side.

“At this point we have confirmed over 300 rounds on our officers,” said Sgt. Clayton Bryant of the LaGrange Police Department.

The officers attempted to enter the residence using an armored vehicle, but the gunfire continued for over an hour. Officers deployed CS gas and smoke in an effort to reduce the risk of hazard to Jesse and officers.

“He was able to disable an armored vehicle which is an important task in itself,” Sgt. Bryant explained.

Troop County Sheriff’s Office, Coveta County Sheriff’s Office, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Newnan Police Department, Peachtree City Police Department and Georgia Bureau of Investigation Explosive Division are assisting.
