Large crowds gathered at the funeral of Ripudaman Singh Malik on Thursday in Delta, BC.
The 75-year-old was shot and killed outside his business in the Newton area of Surrey on July 14.
Malik was a polarizing figure in the community.
To many he was best known as one of two men acquitted in the 1985 Air India bombings, which killed 331 people, most of them from Vancouver and Toronto.
To others he is remembered as a successful businessman and a service-minded community advocate, who founded the Khalsa Credit Union and Sikh-faith Khalsa schools.
In an interview with Global News on the day of his father’s murder, his son Jasprit Malik said that his father was wrongly accused.
“The bulk of his life was his community, his family and the legacy he left with. Khalsa School, Khalsa Credit Union, five children, eight grandchildren,” he said.
Jaspreet said the family never felt any serious threat after being acquitted.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team continues to investigate Malik’s death, and has released security video showing suspects arriving at their workplace in a white Honda CRV the morning they were shot.
Police have yet to publicly talk about a motive, but have said the murder appears to have been targeted.
