Staff from both clubs helped paramedics attending to an emergency at the Hammersmith stand, with fans using flags to provide first responders with some privacy before the aggrieved supporter was taken to the hospital.

Referee Peter Banks consequently ordered both teams off the pitch, before play resumed after a prolonged pause. The club has now revealed the sad news that a fan named Paul Parish has passed away.

Fulham said in a statement: ‘It is with great sadness that we inform fans of the passing of supporter Paul Parish.

‘Paul suffered a cardiac arrest and was treated in the stands at this afternoon’s match before being transferred to the hospital.

‘Our condolences are with Paul’s loved ones.’

This happened after a similar incident occurred at Boundary Park, where Oldham’s League Two game against Rochdale was also called off.

Oldham said the fan was responsive and receiving treatment.

“A heartfelt thank you to the supporters who promptly reported this to the stewards and medical team at Main Stand Upper,” the club tweeted.

‘We will try to provide another update but he is back responsive and is receiving treatment.’

The game has also resumed at Boundary Park.

There have been several incidents this season involving football fans suffering medical emergencies at football matches – many matches have been forced to be suspended.

The first was seen in October between Newcastle and Tottenham, and there have been cases in Watford’s home loss to Chelsea in December and the Hornets’ defeat against Tottenham at Vicarage Road earlier this month.
