Three people died and two others were taken to a nearby hospital after a speeding vehicle crashed into a tree and onto a nearby car in Fredericton early Sunday morning.

According to a releaseFredericton police said the fatal collision happened around 1 a.m. in the 700 block of Douglas Avenue on the city’s north side.

“The vehicle in question is believed to have been traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a tree and struck another vehicle,” police said in a statement.

“The driver and two occupants of the car died at the scene from their injuries.”

Police said an additional two passengers were hospitalized as a result of the crash. One person is currently being treated for serious injuries, while the other has suffered minor injuries.

“The occupants of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries,” police said.

Chief Martin Gaudet called the fatal incident a “terrible tragedy.”

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased and those affected by the accident,” he said in a statement.

“Our thoughts also go out to the first responders who attended the scene.”

Police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and more details will be released later.
