First Omicron case reported in Nagpur, total cases in the state now 18. Huh

Nagpur first reported it omicron The case came to light after a 40-year-old man was cured on Sunday with the latest version COVID-19 Transition in April 2021.

The unvaccinated person had come to the state from South Africa on December 5. This takes the total cases of omicron in the state to 18.

The man had reached Nagpur from South Africa via Delhi on 5 December. According to the Public Health Department, his test came negative in the RT-PCR test conducted at Delhi airport, but his report came out positive in the test done at Nagpur airport.

Later, his sample was sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune for genome sequencing.

The person is currently in isolation at AIIMS Nagpur with mild symptoms. Thirty of his close contacts were traced, but all tested negative for Covid-19.

After recovering from his first infection in April, he had traveled to South Africa with a negative RT-PCR test report. Because of his infection, he delayed getting the vaccine shots.

Till December 12, the state has reported 18 cases of omicrons – five in Mumbai, 10 in Pimpri-Chinchwad, 1 each in Dombivli, Nagpur and Pune city.

“It is expected that the virus will gradually spread to other districts. Therefore, we must promote vaccination, which will be the only shield. It may not provide 100% protection but can control the severity in infected patients,” said Dr Subhash Salunke, member of the National Task Force.
