Fire breaks out at container depot in Bangladesh, 37 killed and hundreds injured CNN

At least 37 people were killed and more than 300 were injured as a fire Torn through a container depot and detonated in the southeast BangladeshThe country’s official news agency reported.

A fire broke out at the BM container depot at Sitakunda in Chittagong district on Saturday night, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangathan (BSS) agency said.

Police and firefighters are trying to douse the fire and save people.

Chittagong civil surgeon Mohammad Ilyas Hussain said the death toll could rise as some of the injured were in critical condition, Reuters news agency reported. He said firefighters and police officers were also among the injured.

Chattogram’s divisional commissioner Ashraf Uddin said a compensation of 50,000 Bangladeshi taka ($560) would be given to the families of those killed, while compensation would also be given to the injured and their families.

The incident is the latest in a series of fatal industrial accidents in the South Asian nation in several years.
