The FBI is investigating claims that Rep. George Santos allegedly raised money for surgery on a former Navy veteran’s dying dog before disappearing with the money.

According to POLITICO, Richard Ostoff says he was contacted on Wednesday by two federal agents on behalf of the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

She told the outlet that she gave agents text messages from Mr. Santos, who she claims raised $3,000 to save pit bull mix Sapphire but never gave it.

Nancy Marks officially filed her resignation from the Serial Liars Campaign and four other political committees affiliated with it with the FEC on Tuesday.

“At the request of the FEC, I am submitting this Form 99, stating that I have resigned as Treasurer of the Devolder-Santos for Congressional Committee, effective January 25, 2023,” she wrote.

His resignation came a week after Mr. Santos’ campaign filed papers naming replacement treasurer Thomas Datwiller – only for Mr. Datwiller to reveal that he had turned down the job and that the congressman had listed him without his authorization.

This prompted the FEC to issue a legal warning to Mr Santos’ campaign about “knowingly and knowingly making any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation to a federal government agency”.

The DOJ then indicated that it had launched its own criminal investigation into Santos’ campaign finances, asking the FEC to suspend any enforcement of its own while it conducts a parallel investigation.

As well as the legal turmoil, Mr Santos stepped down from his committee assignments on Tuesday – just days after he was assigned – and continues to come under scrutiny for a slew of lies.

Mr. Santos’ former roommate confirmed the validity of the outlet’s account and said the congressman often made anti-Semitic remarks. An attorney for Santos told Patch that the Facebook post is “completely false.”

The allegation comes as the Congressman was previously caught lying about being Jewish and that his grandparents fled the Holocaust. He later retracted the claims, saying that he was “Jew-ish”.

The embattled congressman spoke to OAN’s Caitlin Sinclair on Wednesday – hours after being dropped from his committee assignments.

“It’s pretty much always been above board. I’m just going to take additional steps to double check,” he said.

The Congressman lashed out at the media, which he claims has put him on a “trial by fire” to expose his series of lies to the American people.

He said, “People should be judged on the basis of their actions and not by the liturgy through the media, as I have experienced over the past few weeks.”

Thursday’s letter said Mr Santos’ campaign “may have failed to include true, correct, or complete treasurer information” on documents submitted on Wednesday indicating that Thomas Datwiler is its new treasurer and custodian of records.

Five different fundraising committees received the same letter while also sending documents showing Mr. Datwiler as their new treasurer.

The committees and the campaign have to respond before March 2.

They could face criminal charges if they are found to have provided “materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statements or representations” on the documents, the FEC letter said.
