Treasurer of Jorge Santos leaves the campaign

Stranded GOP Congressman George Santos is facing another issue after his longtime treasurer jumped ship amid questionable investigations into his campaign finances by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Nancy Marks officially filed her resignation from the Serial Liars Campaign and four other political committees affiliated with it with the FEC on Tuesday.

“At the request of the FEC, I am submitting this Form 99, stating that I have resigned as Treasurer of the Devolder-Santos for Congressional Committee, effective January 25, 2023,” she wrote.

His resignation came a week after Mr. Santos’ campaign filed papers naming replacement treasurer Thomas Datwiller – only for Mr. Datwiller to reveal that he had turned down the job and that the congressman had listed him without his authorization.

This prompted the FEC to issue a legal warning to Mr Santos’ campaign about “knowingly and knowingly making any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation to a federal government agency”.

The DOJ then indicated that it had launched its own criminal investigation into Santos’ campaign finances, asking the FEC to suspend any enforcement of its own while it conducts a parallel investigation.

As well as the legal turmoil, Mr Santos stepped down from his committee assignments on Tuesday – just days after he was assigned – and continues to come under scrutiny for a slew of lies.

George Santos lashed out at the media

George Santos said on Twitter that the media was trying to “smear” him because of what he claimed to be a “fake post” and a “clown” interview.

“From interviewing clowns, to making fake “posts”, the media is constantly going down because their attempts to discredit me are failing. I’m getting the job I signed up for, while you all control are out,” he tweeted late on Thursday.

He didn’t say what he was referring to, but his comments came as a new report from Patch accused him of making lewd jokes about Hitler and killing Jews and black people.

In a 2011 comment on Facebook obtained by Patch, Mr Santos allegedly wrote: “hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig hiiiiiiiiiiiiitlerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrll lollolololololololololol someone kill him!! jews and blacks mostly lololol!!! dammit.

Mr. Santos’ former roommate confirmed the validity of the outlet’s account and said the congressman often made anti-Semitic remarks. An attorney for Santos told Patch that the Facebook post is “completely false.”

The allegation comes as the Congressman was previously caught lying about being Jewish and that his grandparents fled the Holocaust. He later retracted the claims, saying that he was “Jew-ish”.

Kevin McCarthy spoke to reporters Wednesday about the fate of George Santos and recounted Tuesday’s meeting between the two that resulted in the New York congressman resigning from two committees.

“Santos stepping down is based on Santos’ issues. I think it is better that Santos is not on committees at this time until he clarifies these issues,” Mr. McCarthy told reporters at the Capitol. “I discussed it with him and he said … it would be best not to serve on committees for now.”

According to CNN’s Manu Raju, McCarthy said he had “new questions” about Santos’ long list of lies that would need to be answered before the House Ethics Committee.
