Facebook goes old school with a new feed that favors friends and family

Facebook Is rolling out a new feature Thursday that lets users view posts in reverse chronological order, instead of algorithmically ranked content.

Called “Feeds,” the tool is a dedicated tab in the Facebook app that shows all the latest posts from users’ friends. The main news feed will now be known as “Home” and will act more as a “discovery engine” based on people’s online habits, the company said.

A Meta spokesperson said the feature will be rolled out globally next week initially on mobile. A desktop version is slated for release over the next several weeks.

It’s a nod to a more basic social media experience from the past – pioneered by none other than facebook Self — where the feed was more focused on the activity of friends and family.

By making the main “Home” tab more personal, Meta is also competing with TikTok. Meta is trying to emulate the success of the Chinese-owned video app with young “Gen Z” Internet users, largely driven by its addictive recommendation algorithms.

Home will include Reels, a TikTok clone of Meta, as well as Stories and other personalized content.
