Eric Bieniemy agrees in principle on deal to become Commanders’ new OC: report

Bienemy was the offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs during the previous five seasons, but did not have play-calling duties. Instead, he focused largely on game planning and play design, while head coach Andy Reid called the plays during games.

In Washington, Biennale will be given complete autonomy when it comes to offensive philosophy and calling plays.

Bienami replaces Scott Turner, who was fired in January after three seasons. Washington’s offense during that period was mostly pass heavy and never finished a season ranked higher than 20th in yards. Last season, the Commanders finished the year ranked 26th in points.

Ron Rivera entered his fourth season as head coach of Washington. He has complied with a 22-27-1 record so far, but he led the Commanders to the NFC East title in 2020.

Despite interviewing for several head coaching potentials over the years, Bienami has failed to land the job. Some have attributed his lack of in-game play-calling experience as the loss of his head coaching candidacy.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said before the Super Bowl, “It’s so past-worthy.” “He’s done everything the right way. He’s been a part of this offense and this team for so long, held everyone accountable, been creative in making plays for us. I don’t know why he wasn’t hired But it’s been great for us.”

Bienami would need a contract extension to remain in Kansas City, as his deal expired after last season.

“Eric Bienemy has been tremendous for us, and I think he’s been tremendous for the National Football League,” Reid told reporters on Monday. “I’m hoping he has the opportunity to go somewhere and work his way up to where he can run the show and be Eric Bienemy.”

Bienmi has extensive NFL coaching experience, having served as the Chiefs from 2013 to 2017. He was also the Vikings’ running backs coach.

Bienami also had a long playing career. He spent 10 seasons with the Chargers, Bengals and Eagles.
