from ecojustice environmental protection has filed a notice of application for judicial review of the province’s decision to implement changes to Hamilton’s official plan by expanding the greenbelt to 2,200 hectares.

EcoJustice lawyer Laura Bowman alleged that the province did not comply with its provincial policy statement and the “A Place to Grow Act”.

This fall, the province passed a bill to remove land from 15 separate areas of protected greenbelts to build 50,000 homes, while adding acreage elsewhere.

A spokesman for Housing Minister Steve Clark says he took the action to accommodate Hamilton’s population growth and to allow more homes to be built.

The city of Hamilton did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but its city council has previously said it has no interest in expanding its limits.
