England ‘stronger’ after 2016 heartbreak: Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan says the heartbreak of England’s 2016 World Twenty20 final against the West Indies made him a stronger side as Eoin Morgan’s team seeks redemption in this year’s tournament. Carlos Brathwaite hammered Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes before winning the match for the Caribbean team on England’s trophy. England became world champions in the 50-over format after three years and are among the top contenders for this year’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, starting Sunday.

Jordan conceded only eight runs in the final over of the 2016 final, leaving West Indies needing 19 off six balls bowled by Stokes and warned himself to think it was time to end the game.

The 33-year-old fast bowler said, ‘I will never put myself in that position again. I certainly wouldn’t think so after bowling the 19th over, until it’s all over.

“We laugh about it now, but we’ve definitely come strong for it as a unit.

“I wouldn’t say it bothered us a lot. One has to come out winning and you can’t write something like that in the last over.

Jordan believes top-ranked T20 side England now makes “clear” decisions in moments of crisis, which they helped during their 2019 World Cup-winning campaign.

“The team was on autopilot,” he said. “In any case you saw the game slow down a bit and everyone made an informed and right decision.”

Despite the absence of two injured World Cup heroes – Stokes and pacer Jofra Archer – England have Morgan, Jos Buttler and world number one Twenty20 batsman David Malan.

Jordan said the team’s experience is an important asset as England are the first team to hold both global limited-overs trophies at the same time.

“For this team, being together for so long is chemistry, talent,” he said. “This campaign has all the ingredients for us to do well.”
