England squad for Six Nations confirmed with three high-profile omissions

Steve BorthwickThe man who took over as head coach from Eddie Jones at the end of last year has named a 36-strong group for the tournament starting early next month.

New coach has opted to replace veterans Billy Vunipola, johnny may And jack novel to his first squad.

Number eight Vunipola and Wing May and Nowell were all involved in the 27–13 defeat by South Africa, which marked the end of the autumn and the end of the Jones era.

While all three are not part of the squad that will begin preparations for the opener against Scotland next week, there are recalls for Dan Cole and Elliot Daly.

Cole was dropped by England after the 2019 World Cup final while Daly was knocked out of last year’s Championship despite excellent form for Saracens.

Northampton rookie fly-half Finn Smith is present for the first time, providing cover for Owen Farrell and Marcus Smith, while Ollie Hassell-Collins, George McGuigan, Caden Fife and Jack Walker are the other uncapped players.

“This is an exciting team from the Six Nations with a mix of experience and young talent and includes players who have been in excellent form in the Premiership,” said Borthwick.

“We are looking forward to the challenges of all Six Nations and we will face this great tournament with a sense of courage and total commitment.

“I know the players can’t wait to get back to Twickenham and give our fans a performance they can be proud of. The hard work for the Scotland match starts now.”

England’s first match is against Scotland on Saturday 4 February.
