England captain Eoin Morgan will know when it’s time to part ways: Coach Matthew Mott

EnglandU.S. limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan has struggled for form and fitness lately, but the 35-year-old is “long distance” to the point where he no longer deserves his place in the team, thanks to the newly-appointed white baller. Coach Matthew Mott said.

Morgan took charge of white-ball sides in December 2014, helping them win the 50-over competition in 2019 before guiding England to the Twenty20 World Cup final two years later.

However, he has scored only one half-century in his last 24 white-ball innings for England and Mott said he will be determined to prove his worth.

“He’s always wanted to be picked as a batsman on the basis of form and merit,” said Mott.

“I think there’s a long way to go to be at that point.”

Morgan’s form, who turns 36 this year, could be a concern for England with the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November, but Mott said he can get back to form quickly.

The coach said, “Great players score runs at different times and sometimes you flick a switch and it changes and you wonder what the ruckus is all about.”

“Definitely watching him bat in the nets that he is in great shape and going well. You can already tell how deep an impact they have on this group. He has a lot of good cricket ahead of him.”
