Eggs thrown at French President Macron during the Food Trade Fair

French President Emmanuel Macron suffered a shoulder injury on Monday after an egg was thrown by a man during his visit to an international food trade fair in the French city of Lyon.

A video of the incident was widely shared on social media, in which Macron is seen walking through the crowd when an egg sprung from them without breaking. Two bodyguards can be seen immediately approaching the President to guard his shoulders.

The video also shows a man being escorted from the scene by other bodyguards.

Journalists at the scene heard Macron say, “If he has anything to say to me, he can come.”

No details on the identity or motivation of the person have been released by the authorities.

In June, Macron was slapped in the face by a man as he greeted a public in a small town in southeastern France. He then denounced “violence” and “stupidity”. The slap drew widespread support for France’s head of state from politicians across the ideological spectrum.

Macron, like his predecessors, enjoys spending time mingling with members of the public. Called “crowd baths” in French, they have long been a major focus of French politics.

Macron, 43, has yet to announce his re-election bid, six months before France’s next presidential election, but is expected to do so.
