Dr. Christmas Bob Pranga reveals top tips for decorating your home

Actress and former fashion model Mia Farrow saw Mr. Pranga’s work and asked if he could come home and plant a tree before introducing him to Nikki and Paris’ mother, Cathy Hilton.

‘I officially started doing it in 1989. I started working for a lot of Kathy’s friends, promoting this thing before I called a local TV station and appeared on a show.’

The Dr. Christmas service offering is custom-made to fit every client’s home and tailored to a theme, which is discussed during the consultation meeting at the earliest.

‘We sit down and find out if they want to show off, for their kids…every form is available. In the olden days Christmas followed the fashion but nowadays every home is unique,’ he said.

After consultation and planning the Dr. Christmas team – consisting of 10 crew members except Mr. Pranga and Ms. Staron – set a date and arrive to set up the pieces.

Mr. Pranga tries to be in and out of the client’s home within four hours – sometime after Christmas to take down all the decorations before returning.

‘Christmas is certainly not a cheap thing to do and the average starting price is $5,000 but there is no upper limit.’

Customers at the upper end of the scale are paying Dr. Christmas $280,000 to wish them a Merry Christmas.

Decorating in the Christmas spirit is a full-time job for Mr. Pranga from October to January each year. He also started Dr. Halloween six years ago to capitalize on the horror holiday.

“Halloween is almost as big as Christmas in California,” he explained.

One of the strangest things he’s been asked to do is tie a Christmas tree to a Harley Davidson motorbike so the rider can drive with it.

Although he certainly couldn’t guarantee it was a safe option.

“People think that a designer thinks you need to put a lot of small things on your tree, but it’s not,” he said.

‘You just need to add a focal point to your tree – perhaps somewhere in the middle – that reflects the theme you are going for.

‘One time I did a red Christmas tree with ruby ​​slippers in the center and everyone thought I’d go for The Wizard of Oz.

‘Choose your focal point like a photograph or ornament and have fun with it. The ribbon will also work wonders to help you achieve the designer look.’

She hinted that a lot of celebrity clients were going back to basics with red, gold and green hues this year, but she ‘don’t know why’.

‘Traditional is in this year,’ he said.
