Dog who spent 5 years in Lake Humane Society found a new home

MENTOR, Ohio — A dog who has spent the past five years at the Humane Society Lake has found a new, loving home.

Spike, a 9-year-old pit bull mix, had spent half his life in a kennel.

He was surrendered in 2016 after his family home was burnt down. The traumatic experience haunts Spike at the shelter and is overlooked by those looking for a new pet.

With the help of the shelter, Spike began to come out of his shell. The shelter made it their mission, as part of the “Betty White Challenge,” honoring the late Betty White, a longtime animal advocate, to find a home for Spike to live out his golden years.

On Monday, which would have been White’s 100th birthday, the efforts paid off and adoption was found.

Spike and his new owner hit it off immediately, the shelter said. He will go to his new home on January 20 after a dental surgery.
