Copenhagen: Danish health officials said on Monday that a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine would soon be administered to all people over the age of 40 to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant.
The health authority said in a statement, “Due to the newer and more infectious Omicron variant, the Danish health authority has decided to extend the third time to everyone aged 40 years and older, so they should be given the vaccine after four and a half times of the second jab.” See you after a month.” ,
By reducing the dosing interval, “we will be able to enter winter with better protection for people who are at increased risk of serious disease and increased immunity in the population,” said director Soren Brostrom.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said last week that the third dose is “safe and effective” only three months after the initial vaccine course.
The UK announced on Sunday evening that it would accelerate the rollout of booster doses, opening them up to all over 18 before next year.
Denmark is second only to the UK in Omicron’s confirmed cases, with both countries having extensive sequencing of samples to quickly detect variants.
As of Sunday, 2,471 cases of omicron had been identified in the Nordic country of 5.8 million people, where 80.6 percent of the population over the age of five had already received two doses of the vaccine.
The World Health Organization said on Sunday that the Omicron variant appears to spread faster than the delta version, making vaccines less effective but causing less severe symptoms, while data remains weak.
In response to the surge in cases, Denmark imposed new restrictions last week, closing schools and colleges, reducing nightlife and promoting remote working.
