Democrats invite 11-year-old girl who found herself covered in blood to testify in Uvalde massacre

The House Oversight Committee is set to hold a hearing on the deadly national gun violence spree next week that will feature dramatic testimony from a fourth grader who survived Uvalde, Texas School shooting just a few days ago

It was organized by Panel Chair Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D.N.Y.), who has previously exercised the broad jurisdiction of her committee to investigate gun sales and other cases related to gun violence.

According to a committee release, the first panel of witnesses includes fourth grade student Mia Cerillo, who, after the horrific shooting, said she covered herself with blood to try to fool the shooter into thinking that She’s dead.

She described the horrific incident in an interview, describing how the gunman covered himself with the blood of a dead friend in an attempt to play dead when he went to an adjacent classroom.

She also sought to stop the massacre by calling 911 using a teacher’s phone, pleading with the police: ‘Please come… we are in trouble.’

The committee announced the hearing as the investigation into police conduct continued, and the latest revelation that the sheriff who arrived at the scene to take responsibility for the incident did not have a radio.

Also seen will be Zaire Goodman’s mother, Janetta Everhart, who was injured in an attack on a Buffalo supermarket. Both events helped spark a more national conversation on gun violence and a new push by Democrats for gun control measures.

Roy Guerrero, MD, the only pediatrician in Uvalde, and Felix Rubio and Kimberly Rubio — parents of Lexi Rubio, 10, who died in the shooting — will also attend.

Rubios requested for new gun restrictions after a shooting involving his daughter.

Kimberly Rubio told the New York Times after the shooting, “We live in this red state in a really small town, and everyone keeps telling us, you know, this isn’t the time to be political, but it is — Is.” ‘Don’t let this happen to anyone else.’

Felix Rubio has called for a ban on the AR-15 assault rifles used in the massacre.

“Ten days after the mass shootings in my home state of New York that killed 19 innocent children and two teachers in Texas, I am turning my anger into action,” Maloney said in a statement announcing the hearing.

“Our hearing will examine the horrific impact of gun violence and the urgent need to rein in the weapons of war used to commit these crimes,” she continued.

‘It is my hope that all my colleagues will listen with an open heart as gun violence survivors and loved ones remember one of the darkest days of their lives. This hearing is ultimately about saving lives, and I hope it will inspire my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass legislation to do the same.’

President Joe Biden issued a passionate plea for gun control and other measures in a prime time speech on Thursday. On Thursday, angry clashes erupted in a House judiciary hearing a gun law, in which a GOP lawmaker, Rep. Greg Stub (R-Fla.) zooms out the hearing from home, pulling out three firearms and gun magazines.

Guerrero, the city’s only pediatrician, also once attended Rob Elementary, and described the experience of treating the wounded on the Today show.

‘The most terrifying part, I think, was just seeing the parents I was yelling out to, asking me to look for their kids. You never really get it out of your head,’ he said.
