Delhi: Man drowned in Nizamuddin Baoli

A 38-year-old man died due to drowning in a stepwell at Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah on Tuesday evening.

The man has been identified as Barkat Mohammad. Pathan had gone for a swim in Baoli with his brother Kamil late in the evening. Both jumped into the stepwell to take a bath but Barkat drowned.

Police said that the stepwell is more than 150 feet deep.

RP Meena, DCP (Southeast) said, “We got a PCR call of a person drowning inside the dargah. A police team reached the spot and met Kamil. He told us that he and his brother had jumped into the stepwell but came out of the water fearing drowning. He waited for Barkat to rise again but he drowned.

Police informed the fire brigade and other agencies and soon teams of divers, NDRF and Delhi Fire Services were called to the spot. However, Barkat’s body was not recovered on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, the police again started the search and retrieved Barkat’s body. Police said they took time as the stepwell was deep and several local divers had to descend with the help of ropes to retrieve the body.

“The body has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death. Prima facie… the young man died due to drowning, there seems to be no conspiracy. However, his family members said that he often took bath in the baoli and knew how to swim,” said a police officer.

Police is probing the matter.

Barkat lived with his father near the dargah and worked in a shop.
