Dancer was stabbed to death by her lover in a murder-suicide when she went to break up with him

A dancer was stabbed to death by her ‘jealous’ boyfriend after she went to break up with him during an episode of Love Island, an interrogation heard.

Maddie Durdent-Holambi, 22, was stabbed in the chest repeatedly by her controlling partner Ben Green, 41, after she went home to end their relationship.

An interrogation heard he flew into a rage and stabbed ‘pretty’ Maddie three times at the property on Slate Drive in Kettering, Northamptonshire, on 27 August last year.

Marketing director Mr Green then turned himself on the blade before officers discovered his body covered in blood inside the kitchen.

Maddie was found dead in the bedroom upstairs with the mobile phone next to her and despite the efforts of doctors, nothing could be done to save the couple.

According to one of Maddie’s friends, the pair parted ways once over an episode of Love Island, after she told him that she found a contestant attractive.

A senior coroner had tears in her eyes today after the details of the tragic murder-suicide were relayed to an investigation at the Guildhall in Northampton.

The hearing explained how Maddie broke up with Mr Green instead of talking face-to-face because she felt it was the right thing to do.

But within minutes of reaching home, he was stabbed to death and one force of the knife was so strong that the blade blew through the wound.

Mr. Green went down again and took his own life. A deep wound was found on his neck, severing his jugular vein, and wounds in his arms themselves.

Friends of Maddie from Wimblington, Cambridgeshire described how Mr Green was a ‘jealous person’ who regularly checked Maddie’s phone texts.

Friend Abby Green said he had left her behind about deciding to go on a family vacation to Jamaica with her parents.

Abby said: ‘I thought she was controlling enough. But he made Maddie happy.’

She told friends that she wasn’t sure what to do about her boyfriend and that they were on separate paths.

On August 25, the day before Maddy’s death, the three discussed her options and Maddie resolved to meet Mr. Green after work the next day and break up with him.

He told the group that he ‘won’t let him do this by text’ and felt he owed it to him for doing it face-to-face.

The next day at 3.35 pm, he texted his friends from work saying, ‘I am very nervous’.

Then at 5.51 pm he asked his friends to call him in an hour if they didn’t hear from him.

A minute later she texted him with the message ‘Love you XX’ and that was the last message he had ever sent.

The group did not hear from Maddie again and tried texting and calling her on several occasions that evening.

Abby also tried to call Mr. Green’s phone and left a message that evening at 10.10 that all was well.

The next morning, August 27, he continued to try to contact his friend, but received no response, so he contacted Maddie’s mother, Rachel.

At 1.30 pm that day, officers were called to the house in Kettering he had moved to shortly before the murder, to conduct a welfare check.

There, they find Mr. Green in the kitchen in a pool of blood and Maddy in the bed upstairs. Both were declared brought dead at the scene.

Northamptonshire Senior Coroner Anne Pember broke down when questioned about how Maddie’s loss had led to the loss of her mother.

Rachel Durdant-Holambi said her daughter grew up in love with dancing and added that the pair had “cherished many mother and daughter moments” before the birth of their son, Fabian.

The court was told how Maddie paid attention to her baby brother, even changing his nappy and taking care of him while his mother was busy with household chores.

Rachel said in a statement read out in court: ‘Maddie was incredibly generous and there was nothing better than spoiling her family and friends.

‘I feel as if our lives have been destroyed, shattered. I don’t see the way forward

‘There’s a huge hole in our lives, I want to be a family of four again. She was perfect.

‘I’m trying to put it together for Fabian. I want the rest of her childhood to be as great as that of Maddie.’

She said she felt robbed of helping Maddie choose her wedding dress, taking furniture with her for their home, and kissing her children.

Rachel said: ‘I just miss him. There’s a huge hole in our lives where Maddy should be. She was perfect and sweet. We want him back.

Mr. Green went down again and took his own life. A deep wound was found on his neck, which had ruptured his jugular vein, and his arm had wounds of his own.

‘We were best friends. She will always be my best friend. My heart is broken.’

Maddie began seeing Mr Green over Christmas 2019 after meeting him at a marketing firm where her father, Steve Durdent-Hollamby, worked.

While Mr. Green waited for his house to be built, he stayed with Maddie’s family for five weeks, befriended her father, and eloped with her.

Mother Rachel said that she did not see anything wrong in the relationship and did not witness any abusive behavior.

Entering a verdict of unlawful manslaughter, Northamptonshire Senior Coroner Anne Pember became emotional and had to stop.

She said: ‘In my 27 years as coroner I think this is the saddest case ever.

‘I can’t imagine your pain at the loss of your daughter. I am truly sorry for your loss.’

After Maddy’s death, a separate investigation into Mr. Green’s death took place in which the coroner concluded that he had taken his own life.

The hearing was told that she had been married for ten years and had three children before her marriage broke up in 2007.

He had a cordial relationship with his ex-wife, who when he heard of the deaths said: ‘He would not hurt a fly.’

His brother Thomas Green told the court: ‘Ben is not violent. I think he must have arrived before doing something like this. It comes as a major setback.
