Crime Branch to re-investigate the rape case that wrongly arrested two brothers

The brothers, aged 20 and 19, were arrested by the Dharavi police on May 15. 19 year old married woman raped at home, The woman had alleged that on May 11, two men barged into her residence and raped her. FIR was registered.

A senior official said, “After the investigation conducted by the local police, it was decided to ask the crime branch to investigate the matter afresh.”

The officer said that the case is being investigated by Unit 5 of Mumbai Crime Branch. The present case is part of around 20-25 cases, which have been transferred from local police units to the crime branch, an official said. “Many crimes registered in local police stations that were not solved were transferred by the Mumbai Police Commissioner to the crime branch,” an official said.

After their arrest, the families of the two brothers had approached senior police officials with evidence that they were present at some other place at the time of the rape. Eventually, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vishwas Nangre Patil intervened and when he interrogated the men, it was revealed that they were not involved in the case. Following this, the brothers were released on bail and were finally released by the Banarada court last week.

“We will investigate again to find out if anyone else is involved in the matter. We will also record the woman’s detailed statement again,” said a Mumbai crime branch official.
